First Week Back

Ring the Bell!
Round two started this week!

We decided to stay home for spring break this year instead of our typical annual camping trip in Utah.
That worked out great, because the kids and I were able to get the high tunnel up and in operation.

You can see that we're opting for a Square Foot Garden approach this year.  Last year I strung seeds out in random rows, (which actually worked fine) but I can see some advantages to this way.  One is that the kids could say "What's in this square?" and I could say "Look at the plan."  They'd consult the plan (on an ipad app.  More on that later....) and then check the SFG book and say "Okay!  Nine spinaches in that square!" and plant it.  That was pretty cool, and I LOVE anything that gives the kids more ownership.

Here we've covered the beds with plastic left over from the cover.  Hopefully it will hold some of the water and get my powdery dry compost to absorb some moisture.  (Link here to future posts on compost.  (He he he!  compost post...) A.  how I'm getting it  B.  what drives me nuts about composting C.  what to watch out for in March  D. how to solve the dryness problem)
Last year we worked on building the structure over the month of April, (see the process here) and I planted it on Mother's Day.  That was great, but earlier would have been better.

How much earlier?
I have no idea!  (link here to future post on infuriating lack of long distance thermometers)
Is it still freezing in there?

Duno.  We'll find out.

So - I do know that it's in the 80s on sunny afternoons, and that my soil is hovering around 45, so we stuck some seeds in the ground.

To be continued!
